Before opening a forex account, assemble the evidence you would need to explain who holds the account, what documents you are submitting, how the terms work and how you would recover or withdraw your money. Completing an application should be the end of that review, not a substitute for it.

This checklist is for someone who already has a candidate provider. It is not a universal document list or a recommendation to fund an account. Requirements depend on the country, contracting entity, client classification and product.

Confirm the destination before sharing documents

Find the legal company named in the proposed agreement. Independently check the relevant regulator’s records, permitted services and official contact information. Record the exact website and onboarding route you intend to use.

The CFTC advises researching forex dealers before providing sensitive personal information or making a deposit. Its registration and disciplinary-history checks address US retail over-the-counter forex. Use the appropriate authority for your own proposed account rather than assuming a foreign registration is sufficient.

A reference number is not enough. The FCA describes clone firms copying genuine names, addresses and reference numbers. If a message redirects you to a different website or company, resolve the discrepancy independently before uploading anything.

Keep the review practical: save the agreement, regulator result and contact details together. Do not put identity documents into a shared comparison spreadsheet or send them to an unsolicited contact merely because they know the broker’s name.

Build a document pack from the actual requirements

Obtain the provider’s current requirements for your country and account type. Ask about accepted formats, document validity, translation requirements and what to do if your residential address or legal name has changed.

The NFA’s US forex regulatory guide explains customer identification and identity verification, including documentary and non-documentary methods. Its examples include passports and driving licenses. It is evidence for that US framework, not a rule that every applicant worldwide must upload the same documents.

Use this preparation table to ask for specifics:

The table is an organizational aid, not a statement that every item is mandatory. Do not alter a document or guess an answer to get past an application screen. Ask the provider how to correct inconsistencies truthfully.

Save the contract and read the account terms

Before accepting, retain the version of the agreement presented to you and the schedules it incorporates. Note the legal entity, client classification, account currency, product and date of retrieval. If a document cannot be downloaded, ask how to obtain a durable copy.

Read for decisions rather than merely searching for reassuring words. What can trigger liquidation? How are orders handled? Which law and complaint process apply? What happens when an account becomes inactive or you request closure?

For CFDs, Moneysmart explains that contracts differ between issuers and that you rely on the issuer to meet its obligations. Its Australian guidance directs readers to the product disclosure statement and terms. Elsewhere, the document names may differ; find the documents governing your actual account.

Check any proposed change from retail to another classification separately. Do not select a more experienced or professional category just because the form or salesperson presents it as an upgrade. Read what would change before agreeing.

Map costs and money movement before funding

Identify the fee schedule for the exact account. Moneysmart lists spreads, commissions and overnight financing among CFD costs. Also ask whether conversion, funding, withdrawal, inactivity or closure charges apply; these are verification questions, not claims that every account has them.

For withdrawals, record:

• Which destinations are eligible and what ownership checks apply.

• Whether the withdrawal route must relate to the original funding method.

• What additional verification may be requested and through which secure channel.

• Applicable minimums, charges, processing windows and payment-provider dependencies.

• How open positions, unsettled amounts or required margin affect available withdrawals.

Distinguish the provider’s processing estimate from the date money reaches your bank. Do not turn either into a guarantee. If the schedule is ambiguous, request the relevant contractual explanation before transferring funds.

Unexpected demands to pay more to release money deserve particular scrutiny. The CFTC reports complaints involving unregistered offshore forex dealers that ignored withdrawal requests or demanded additional payments. That warning does not prove misconduct by any unnamed provider, but it is a reason to verify an unexpected demand independently rather than automatically paying it.

Prepare access, records and an escalation route

Use a unique password and enable additional authentication where supported. Record the official account-recovery procedure, not passwords or recovery codes in a public document. Review any access you are granting to connected applications or third parties.

Locate statements and transaction exports, the formal complaints address and any external escalation mechanism stated for the account. Ask which records you would need if a payment or order were disputed. Do not assume that a sales representative is the formal complaint handler.

An account-opening checklist is incomplete if it describes only how money gets in. It should also explain where records live, how access is recovered and which process handles a problem.

Make the final decision a documented checkpoint

Mark each essential item confirmed, unresolved or not applicable. “Not applicable” should have a reason; “unresolved” should not silently become a tick.

Do not proceed while the contracting company, document destination, material liability terms or withdrawal route remains unclear. A completed application is an administrative milestone—not evidence that trading is suitable or that funds are safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every broker require proof of address?

Do not assume a universal rule or accepted document list. Obtain the requirements for your entity and residence, including whether the provider uses documents or another verification method.

Should I deposit before identity verification is complete?

First confirm the provider’s process and what restrictions apply before completion. This checklist does not recommend funding an account to accelerate approval; unresolved identity or withdrawal requirements are reasons to pause.

Can I use someone else’s payment account?

Ask the provider about its ownership and third-party payment rules before attempting any transfer. Do not assume permission or use another person’s details to bypass a requirement.

Does account approval mean forex trading is suitable for me?

No such conclusion follows from this checklist. Administrative acceptance should remain separate from your understanding of the product, its risks and whether you can afford the potential loss.
