Choosing a forex broker starts with evidence about the account you would actually open, not a logo, headline spread or recommendation from a stranger. Identify the contracting company, check its authorization, understand your account terms and compare costs under the same assumptions. Only then evaluate the platform and service.

Treat this as a sequence of gates. An attractive feature should not compensate for an unexplained legal entity or missing withdrawal policy. The goal is a defensible shortlist—not proof that any broker is risk-free.

Start with the product and your non-negotiables

Write down your country of residence, intended account classification, preferred account currency, instruments and devices. Separate essential requirements from preferences. Clear documentation might be essential; a particular chart color is not.

Establish what “forex” means in the offer. A currency CFD is not ownership of the underlying currency: it is speculation on a price change. ASIC’s Moneysmart explanation also warns that leveraged forex products can turn small market movements into substantial losses. Buying currency for travel and opening a leveraged trading account are different decisions.

If you cannot explain the product or tolerate losing the money committed to trading, pause the broker comparison. Better administration does not remove market risk.

Verify the company behind the brand

Find the legal company named in the proposed client agreement. Record its regulator, reference number, registered address and the website you are using. Then independently check the relevant regulator’s records and the activities the firm is permitted to provide.

For a UK-facing offer, the FCA’s clone-firm guidance recommends checking authorization and permission for the service. It warns that fraudsters copy genuine names, addresses and reference numbers. A matching number alone therefore does not establish that your contact is genuine.

For US retail over-the-counter forex, the CFTC advises checking registration and disciplinary history before depositing money or handing over sensitive information. Those are US checks, not a global licensing requirement. Start with the authority relevant to your residence and proposed service.

Ask the provider to resolve any mismatch between the agreement, register entry and onboarding website. Do not infer that every company using a group brand has identical permissions or protections. Make the contracting entity—not the group’s most recognizable license—the subject of your research.

Read protections as conditions, not badges

Build a protection record with these fields: rule or policy, covered entity, eligible client, covered product and exclusions. Include the complaint process and any external escalation route available to that specific account.

Negative balance protection illustrates why scope matters. Under the applicable UK retail rules, FCA COBS 22.5 limits liability for restricted speculative investments to funds in the account. That is not a promise that the account cannot lose its funds, and it is not a worldwide rule for every forex product.

If offered a different classification or entity, repeat the review rather than carrying your assumptions across. The FCA has warned about pressure to claim professional status and promotions involving offshore firms. Do not accept a change solely to access higher leverage.

Keep broker failure separate from trading losses. Moneysmart warns that you may not recover your money if your forex provider becomes insolvent. Regulation is a research gate, not a guarantee of recovery.

Compare total cost on a consistent basis

Ask each shortlisted provider for the fee schedule covering the same entity, account and instrument. Moneysmart identifies commissions, spreads and overnight financing as CFD costs; comparing only one component leaves an incomplete picture.

Use this worksheet as a request for information, not an assumption that every charge applies:

Use a qualitative scenario before reaching for a calculator. Someone evaluating short holding periods needs a different cost inquiry from someone considering overnight positions. Keep the intended instrument and position assumptions unchanged between providers. If a schedule does not make the units clear, ask for a written explanation rather than producing a misleading total.

Check execution, access and the exit route

Read the execution policy for order handling, rejection, pricing and unusual market conditions. Ask what support is available when the platform is inaccessible. Moneysmart notes that liquidity, execution risk and computer problems can delay trading; an interface screenshot cannot establish execution reliability.

Review how you would withdraw and close the account before considering a deposit. Confirm eligible payment methods, required verification, possible charges and the distinction between processing a request and receiving money. These are questions for the exact account terms, not universal timing promises.

Create an evidence folder containing the agreement, fee schedule, register result and written answers. Label each item with the entity, account and retrieval date. A support conversation is useful clarification, but ask where the answer appears in the governing documents if it affects your rights.

Turn the evidence into a decision

Use three outcomes: eligible for further review, needs clarification, or exclude. Do not average unresolved authorization questions into a numerical score alongside convenient features.

Before retaining a candidate, check:

• The agreement and regulatory record identify the same company.

• Country eligibility and client classification are understood.

• Protection claims have specific scope and limitations.

• Costs use comparable assumptions and explicit units.

• Withdrawal, complaint and account-closure procedures are documented.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a regulated broker automatically safe?

No. The CFTC cautions that registration alone may not protect you from fraud. It also does not remove the market risk of the product you trade; verify both the genuine provider and the account’s terms.

Should I choose the broker with the lowest spread?

Not from that figure alone. Compare spread, applicable commissions, financing and account-related charges under consistent assumptions. An unknown fee should remain unknown until documented.

Can a familiar brand use a different company for my account?

Do not rely on familiarity to answer that question. Read the company named in your proposed agreement and check that entity independently, especially if onboarding redirects you to another offer.

What if support cannot explain an important term?

Keep the candidate in “needs clarification” rather than filling the gap yourself. If the missing answer concerns authorization, access to funds or liability, there is no need to continue toward account opening while it remains unresolved.
