Foreign-exchange quotes always name two currencies, and the order is not cosmetic. In EUR/USD, the euro is the base currency — the currency being bought or sold — and the US dollar is the quote currency, the currency used to express the price. A quote of EUR/USD 1.1205 means one euro exchanges for 1.1205 US dollars [1]. Most retail traders learn this convention for reading charts and then stop thinking about currency order. That is where a real, recurring cost hides: the currency your broker account is denominated in — often also called the account's base currency — can differ from your deposit currency, and every crossing between them charges you.

Two meanings of "base currency" — and why the second one costs you money

Traders use "base currency" in two distinct senses. The first is the quote convention above. The second comes from accounting: a bank or company can use a currency as its functional currency, converting all profits and losses into it. A British bank that books everything in sterling converts a USD profit from a EUR/USD position at the prevailing GBP/USD rate — many market participants now say "currency 1" and "currency 2" precisely because this single phrase covers two different things [1].

Your broker account works the same way. If you open a USD-denominated account, every position's profit, loss, margin and commission are eventually expressed in US dollars. If your salary and savings are in Thai baht, that means your money crosses the THB/USD boundary at least three times: going in, while it sits in the account, and coming back out.

Where conversion happens: deposits, P&L, withdrawals

Deposits. When you fund a USD account with baht, the broker (or your bank, or a payment processor) converts your deposit. Whatever rate is applied will sit on one side of the mid-market rate, and the gap is a cost — it appears immediately as a smaller starting balance than your arithmetic suggests. On the withdrawal trip, the same conversion runs in reverse against whatever rate prevails that day.

Profit and loss. The moment you close a position, the result is converted into your account currency. Trading a GBP/JPY pair from a USD account means the profit in yen must be converted twice — once into GBP or USD depending on the quoting chain, and again if the account currency differs [1].

Withdrawals. This is the final crossing, and it can also interact with fixed withdrawal fees and minimum amounts, effectively charging you conversion friction on a balance you may never have intended to trade.

What the arithmetic looks like — a worked, illustrative example

The European Central Bank publishes daily reference rates against the euro. On 22 October 2026, the reference rates were EUR/USD 1.1205 and EUR/THB 37.811 [2]. Dividing one by the other gives an implied cross of about 33.745 baht per US dollar. (These ECB rates are reference rates for information, not the rate any broker will give you — they are used here only to anchor the arithmetic.)

All numbers in this section are illustrative. The conversion margins are assumed examples, not measured broker fees; every broker sets its own terms.

• Deposit: You send 100,000 THB to a USD account. At the ECB-derived mid rate, that is about USD 2,963. If the applied conversion adds an illustrative 1% margin, you start with about USD 2,934 — roughly 1,000 THB of your money has become a conversion cost before a single trade. At an assumed 2% margin, the cost is about 2,000 THB. Either way, that money is gone even if every trade you make is perfectly flat.

• P&L conversion: Suppose the account closes with USD 850 of profit and you want to see it in sterling. The ECB-derived cross of GBP/USD is 0.7476 (1.1205 × 0.83770). At mid, USD 850 is about GBP 635. An illustrative 1% conversion margin reduces it to about GBP 629 — roughly USD 8.50 lost to currency conversion on money you earned.

• Withdrawal: A USD 5,000 balance converts at mid to about THB 168,724. With an assumed 1.5% combined conversion-and-withdrawal friction, you would receive about THB 166,193 — about 2,531 THB surrendered at the last step.

Notice the pattern: the percentages look small, but they apply every time money changes currency, and they compound across the deposit → trade → withdraw round trip. A trader who funds and withdraws several times a year pays these costs repeatedly, whether or not any trade was profitable.

What to check before you choose

• Does the broker offer an account currency that matches your money? Many brokers offer USD, EUR, GBP and sometimes local-currency accounts or multi-currency sub-accounts. Holding your account in your deposit currency can eliminate the conversion at entry and exit entirely.

• What conversion terms are actually stated? Conversion margins, spreads on conversions, and who applies them (broker, bank, card network, payment processor) vary by provider and payment method. The illustrative percentages in this article are examples — ask the broker what its terms are before depositing.

• Where does the friction sit? Some of the conversion cost may occur outside the broker entirely, at your bank or payment provider, which means the broker's stated "conversion fee" may not be the full story.

• Is it worth converting at all? Holding a foreign account while your life is in another currency is itself a form of un-hedged currency exposure: your account balance rises or falls in home-currency terms with the exchange rate, even with no trades open.

None of this makes foreign-currency accounts wrong. For a trader whose income is in USD or who trades US-dollar pairs almost exclusively, a USD account is often the cleanest choice. The mistake is not noticing that the account currency is a decision with a price tag attached.

A note on risk: conversion costs are a genuine, recurring expense, but they are not a reason to distrust any particular broker — they are a structural feature of moving money between currencies. What matters is that you know the terms before depositing, and that you count all three crossings (in, during, out) rather than only the spread on your trades.
