Most beginner articles on lot sizes stop at "a standard lot is 100,000 units." That is true, but it is not the decision traders actually face. The real question is: how large should my position be so that a losing trade costs a known, acceptable amount? This article explains what lot sizes are, what each size means in pip-value terms, and how to turn a risk budget into a position size with simple arithmetic.

What a lot actually is

Currencies are not traded one dollar or one euro at a time. They trade in fixed contract sizes, called lot sizes, or multiples of them. The lot exists because the interbank market deals in large blocks. Retail brokers package those blocks so a small account can buy a fraction of one: 0.10 lots is 10,000 units, 0.01 lots is 1,000 units. The lot you choose decides how much one pip of price movement is worth to you — and that single number drives everything else in your risk.

Standard, mini, and micro lots

These pip values are illustrative and exact for pairs quoted to four decimal places against the US dollar (such as EUR/USD), where one pip is 0.0001. One pip on a standard lot of a USD-quote pair is 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10. A mini lot is one tenth of that, $1; a micro lot $0.10. Nano lots are uncommon and not every broker offers them; treat the last row as illustrative of the pattern rather than a market standard.

The practical takeaway: pip value scales linearly with lot size. Doubling the lot doubles both the profit potential and the loss potential of every pip.

Pip values when the dollar is not the quote currency

The ~$10-per-pip figure holds for pairs quoted in USD. When the quote currency is something else, the pip value is denominated in that currency and must be converted. Wikipedia's Percentage in point article lists the convention: EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD and NZDUSD pip values are US$0.0001 per unit, while USDJPY is ¥0.01 per unit — the yen is quoted to two decimals, so its pip is the second decimal place, not the fourth.

Illustrative example (computed, not a live quote): at USD/JPY 150.00, one pip on a standard lot is 100,000 × ¥0.01 = ¥1,000, which converts to ¥1,000 / 150 = about $6.67. The same 30-pip stop that would risk $300 on one standard lot of EUR/USD risks roughly $200 on USD/JPY at that rate. The conversion rate moves, so the dollar value of a yen-denominated pip moves with it — another reason to check your platform's pip-value display rather than assuming $10.

Most modern platforms also quote with a fractional pip (a fifth decimal, or a third for JPY pairs). Your platform usually does the rounding for you; the per-lot pip value it displays is the one to trust.

Position sizing: turning a risk budget into a lot count

Position sizing is the discipline of choosing the lot size after you know two things: how much money you are willing to lose on the trade, and where your stop will sit in pips. The formula is simple:

Lots = (Account risk in currency) ÷ (Stop distance in pips × Pip value per lot)

Illustrative example: an account where you accept $200 of risk per trade, and a EUR/USD setup with a 40-pip stop. Pip value per standard lot is $10.

That trade risks exactly $200 if the stop is hit — 0.5 standard lots, or 5 mini lots, or 50 micro lots; the broker's lot granularity decides which fraction you can actually enter.

Second example with a yen pair: $150 of risk, a 30-pip stop on USD/JPY at 150.00, pip value about $6.67 per standard lot (illustrative, computed above).

A common heuristic is to risk a small fixed percentage of the account per trade — often quoted as 1–2% — but the percentage itself is a personal risk choice, not a market rule, and no fixed percentage makes a strategy profitable. What the formula guarantees is only this: your maximum loss per trade is known before you enter, instead of discovered after.

How lot size interacts with leverage, margin, and costs

Leverage and lot size are related but not the same decision. Leverage determines how much margin the broker holds; lot size determines how much price movement exposes you to. Wikipedia notes that most retail speculative trading is conducted in margin accounts "requiring only a small percentage (typically 1%) of the purchase price as equity." Illustratively, one standard lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000 is a $110,000 notional position; at 1% margin the broker locks about $1,100.

That small margin requirement is why lot size, not leverage, is the real risk lever. A 0.5-lot position on a $1,000 account is dangerous at any leverage setting, because the pip value ($5 per pip) can wipe the account in a couple of hundred pips regardless of how little margin was posted. Costs also scale with lots. Spreads are quoted in pips and charged per position size: a 0.5-pip spread on a standard lot costs about $5 to cross (0.5 × $10); the same spread on a micro lot costs $0.05. Commission-based accounts charge per lot traded. Larger intended sizes therefore pay proportionally more in transaction costs, which matters for strategies that trade frequently with small targets.

Common mistakes

Maxing out leverage instead of sizing from risk. The largest position your margin allows is rarely the position your risk budget allows. Start from the stop distance and the dollar risk; the lot count follows.

Assuming $10 per pip everywhere. That figure applies to USD-quote pairs. For USD/JPY or crosses like EUR/GBP, the pip value is in another currency and converts at the current rate. Platforms display the correct value — use it.

Assuming every instrument uses the same lot definition. Currency pairs use 100,000 units of the base currency, but gold, indices and other CFDs define their contract sizes differently. One "lot" of XAU/USD is not 100,000 troy ounces. Check the instrument's contract specification before applying pip-value math from this article to non-FX instruments.

Sizing up after wins, sizing up after losses. A known risk per trade only works if it stays known. Increasing size to recover a loss multiplies the next drawdown by the same math that produced the first one.
