Two numbers on a trading platform do more to explain what a forex account actually is than almost any other: the margin used by your open positions and your margin level. This article walks through margin, leverage, the margin call and the stop-out — and shows with a fully worked, illustrative example how many pips of adverse movement separate a healthy account from automatic position closure. The figures in the example are hypothetical; your broker's exact thresholds and formulas take precedence.

Margin is collateral, not a fee

In finance, margin is the collateral a trader posts to hold a leveraged position — not a charge paid to the broker. In a margin account, the deposited funds (or eligible securities) act as collateral for the exposure the trader takes on, and if losses exceed what the account holds, the trader owes the difference. Retail forex trading works this way: when you open a EUR/USD position, you are not exchanging full-size currency amounts; you are posting a fraction of the notional as collateral.

Brokers distinguish two kinds of requirement:

• Initial (required) margin — the collateral needed to open a position. For a retail forex position it is typically expressed as a percentage of notional, which is where leverage ratios like 30:1 or 100:1 come from (a 3.33% requirement is 30:1; a 1% requirement is 100:1).

• Maintenance margin — the minimum collateral a position must retain once it is open. If account equity falls to this area, warnings and forced closure follow.

Both are set by the broker and can change with market conditions; brokers may revise margin requirements at any time, for example around news events or weekends.

Leverage connects margin to position size

Leverage is the ratio between your notional exposure and the collateral you post. The relationship is simple arithmetic:

Required margin = notional size ÷ leverage

For one standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD quoted at 1.1600:

• At 30:1, required margin = 100,000 × 1.1600 ÷ 30 ≈ 3,866.67 USD

• At 100:1, required margin = 100,000 × 1.1600 ÷ 100 = 1,160.00 USD

(Illustrative figures computed with Python; the quote is hypothetical.)

The same arithmetic that shrinks the collateral also magnifies results. Leverage magnifies both gains and losses: an investor who buys stock on 50% margin loses 40% of their own money if the stock falls 20%, because losses are measured against the trader's capital, not the notional. In forex this effect is larger because leverage ratios are higher, and currency markets also exhibit persistent characteristics traders exploit — such as the carry trade, where borrowing a low-rate currency to buy a higher-yielding one becomes "a double-edged sword, and large exchange rate price fluctuations can suddenly swing trades into huge losses."

Retail forex access exists almost entirely through leveraged margin products — brokers and banks intermediate retail speculation, and this margin-based OTC derivatives segment (including contracts for difference) is what regulators such as the CFTC and the NFA oversee in the US, and what was historically overseen in the UK under financial-services regulation. Because leverage is the key amplifier of retail risk, many jurisdictions cap the maximum leverage retail clients can be offered — the caps differ by regulator and instrument, so treat "up to 500:1" marketing claims as jurisdiction-dependent rather than universal.

Margin level, margin call, stop-out

Platforms track one live percentage that decides everything:

Margin level = (equity ÷ used margin) × 100

Equity is your balance plus or minus floating profit and loss on open positions; used margin is the total collateral locked by open positions.

• Margin call: historically an actual request to add funds; today usually a platform alert that your margin level has fallen to a warning threshold (often around 100%, meaning equity equals used margin). No positions are closed yet — but there is no buffer left.

• Stop-out: the margin level at which the platform starts force-closing positions, usually the largest losing one first, to bring the level back above the threshold. Commonly quoted around 50%, but the exact percentage is set per broker — verify yours in the platform's account terms, not from a generic article.

Two more platform behaviors matter:

• Negative balance protection, where offered, caps your loss at the deposited amount — but not every broker or jurisdiction offers it, so check whether an account can go below zero.

• Because margin is per-position, hedged or correlated positions can consume margin in ways that are easy to underestimate; the margin level is account-wide, not per trade.

Worked illustrative example

Scenario (all figures hypothetical, computed step by step with Python):

• Account equity: 1,000 USD. Open position: long 0.1 lot (10,000 units) EUR/USD.

• Pip value for 0.1 lot EUR/USD ≈ 1 USD per pip (10,000 × 0.0001).

• Used margin depends on leverage: at 100:1 it is 10,000 × 1.1600 ÷ 100 = 116 USD; at 30:1 the same position would need ≈ 386.67 USD.

Suppose used margin is 500 USD (a higher-leverage product or additional positions). With a 50% stop-out threshold:

• Stop-out triggers when equity = 0.5 × 500 = 250 USD, i.e. after a floating loss of 750 USD.

• At ~1 USD per pip, that is 750 pips of adverse movement on this position.

• After a 100-pip adverse move, equity = 900 USD and margin level = 900 ÷ 500 × 100 = 180% — still healthy, which is the point: distance to stop-out is measured in pips × pip value against equity, not in leverage ratios.

Now note what leverage changes: with used margin of 116 USD (100:1) and the same 1,000 USD equity, the 50% stop-out sits at equity = 58 USD, i.e. about 942 pips away on this position. Lower leverage means more margin is used but more equity sits free as a buffer; higher leverage lets you open the same position with less collateral, which frees margin for more positions — and it is the extra positions, not the leverage itself, that usually burn accounts. Margin level is computed across everything open at once.

Practical checklist

• Confirm your broker's exact margin call and stop-out percentages in the account terms; treat 100%/50% only as typical examples.

• Check how your platform closes positions at stop-out (largest loser first is common, but confirm) and whether negative balances are protected.

• Before opening, compute required margin and your distance to stop-out in pips for the position size you actually intend to trade.

• Re-check margin requirements around high-impact events and weekends; brokers can and do raise them.

Margin and leverage are plumbing, not strategy. The pip math that decides whether you survive is pip value × movement against equity — and the only numbers that count are the ones in your own account terms.
